KAURI

The tallest of all rakau the kauri has chiefly status.  In the pūrākau of the separation of Papatūānuku and Ranginui, as told by those of northern iwi) Tāne-mahuta lay on his back and used his legs of giants kauri trees to push his parents apart. 
 
Whilst kauri was not as useful as other trees for building and carving it provided  berries that attracted manu - an important food source.
